Max Ballard

Max Ballard is a painter, muralist, illustrator and designer living and working on Kaurna Land in Adelaide, South Australia. Ranging from acrylic and oil pieces on canvas to large scale murals, his work explores the way in which we perceive everyday spaces, and how these perceptions are impacted by familiarity, memory and nostalgia. Often switching between realism and completely abstract, a common element in his work is the tension and harmony between rigid structure and free flowing forms.

Max graduated with a Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) from the University of South Australia in 2021. 

Since 2021 he has exhibited across both Tarndanya/Adelaide and Naarm/Melbourne with both group and solo exhibitions, and has been a finalist in the West Torrens Art Prize (2021), the Gallery M Contemporary Art Prize (2022 and 2023), and the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize (2023 and 2025).
